| Partnerships with the Nurses for Tobacco Control Coalition (NTCC) started in 2003 during the first Summer Institute for Tobacco Control Practices in Nursing Education at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Through funding with the American Legacy Foundation, over 80 schools of nursing had faculty members attend the 2 day train-the-trainer workshop. Based on the evidence-based, the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Rx for Change: Clinician Assisted Tobacco Cessation Curriculum, nursing faculty obtained the essential skills and knowledge to integrate tobacco control practices in their classrooms and practice settings. In 2005, additional funding from the UCSF Smoking Cessation Leadership Center, provided support to galvanize acute and critical care nurses to integrate tobacco control practices at the local, state, and national level. Through this initiative, founders of NTCC recognized a need for nurses to have a centralized area to obtain resources to improve tobacco control practices. |
